If you're a passionate home cook, having an extensive array of spices on hand is a must. The last thing you want to do is disrupt your cooking flow while you shuffle around in the pantry looking for the turmeric. Finding unique ways to store your items can make cooking a lot more efficient and fun. Read below for ideas on how you can make your very own magnetic spice rack in no time.
Materials
- 4-oz. spice tins with transparent tops (quantity is up to you)
- Sheet of steel (18"x20", or your desired size)
- Rust-oleum rust protective enamel spray paint
- Velcro
- Pack of magnets
- Super Glue
- Spice labels
Directions:
Begin by determining how many spice tins you'll need for your rack. This will help you when you're buying magnets and jar labels.
You want to start with a very thin sheet of steel. Heavier pieces will require a more intensive process, and the last thing you want is to damage the mounting surface. First, spray on a coat of Rust-Oleum to prevent your sheet from rusting; the kitchen can be a high-humidity place. Now you can mount the sheet your surface of choice using strips of velcro.
Adhere small pieces of magnet to the bottom of the tins. Because the point of this project is to make your spices more visible, you'll want to keep the facing sides clear and place a label either along the side, or on the bottom with the magnet.
Exposure to heat and light may affect freshness, so make sure to install your spice rack in an area that is dark, cool, and dry. Fill up your tins with spice and you're done!
Tips & Tricks
If you lack the wall space, ditch the steel sheet and hang your tins directly on your refrigerator. If you prefer to keep this space liberally decorated with your child's kindergarten drawings, place your spices on the underside of a shelf. If you can’t find tins, use hexagonal jars; they make a lovely honeycomb design.
There's no limit to the ways you can display your spices. Now let your creativity go; make it your very own.
