Creative ideas that will get the accessories in your closet organized in no time.

Keeping the clothes in your closet organized can be a challenge, but it can be next to impossible to use the space to keep track of all of your accessories. If you’re the owner of dozens of hats, purses, belts, and jewelry, follow these tips to keep your closet organized and your accessories where you can find them.

Learn more about organizing your space.

Purses

Designate part of a shelf for your larger handbags. Use metal bookends in between each purse to keep them laying neatly next to each other.

If you have purses you use frequently, hang them from your clothes bar with shower curtain hooks. Use heavy duty hooks for heavier bags. If you’re running out of space, mount a new tension bar in a spot under your shirts and skirts. This is an area of the closet that few people use, and it’s a perfect place to hang purses.

If you just don’t have space anywhere else, it may be time to invest in extra shelving. Fortunately, there are a lot of great options on the market that don’t require you to hire a contractor to install. Free standing “cubbies” can be found at most mass merchandizers, and they’re the perfect size for organizing larger accessories like purses. Use the top to organize shoes. You might also want to consider utilizing an old dresser or bookshelf.

Wallets and Clutches

Use magazine organizers (the clear plastic kind work best) to keep your wallets and clutches where you can easily see them. If you’re running out of shelf space, hang a wine rack in your closet. Use each small shelf for a separate wallet or small purse. You might also want to consider hanging wire mail baskets for the same purpose.

Belts

Vertical paper towel holders are a great way to organize your belt collection. Wrap each belt around the center post of towel holder. You can stack five or six belts on each one.

Jewelry

Create a place to display and organize your earrings by mounting a piece of fine wire mesh inside a heavy wooden frame. When you take your earrings off, just hang them on the screen. If you have the room, attach hooks to the bottom of the frame for necklaces and bracelets.

Scarves

Coat racks are a great way to organize your scarves. You’ll be able to see everything at once, and the scarves won’t be tangled with your clothes or other accessories.

Everything Else

If you’ve used all the space in your closet, then it’s time to start thinking vertically. The walls of your closet are the perfect place to mount pegboard. Attach hooks to the board, and use the hooks to organize everything else in your closet. As an added bonus, you’ll be able to see it all easily when you’re getting dressed in the morning. Of course, don’t forget about using your closet doors if you’re looking for more space.

Organizing your closet is a time-consuming project, but it will pay off in spades when you're putting together your outfit for the day. A well organized closet will also allow you to know exactly what you own, what needs to be replaced, and what you need to buy.
